CONSENSUS CANDIDATES

H. D. DEVEGOWDA, I. K. GUJRAL AND DR. MANMOHAN SINGH became prime minister as consensus candidates. They might not have ever thought that one day they will become prime ministers of a great nation, the world's second biggest democracy. This happened due to divided mandate as no body in the respective times ,enjoyed the acceptance among the people, of the level of pt. Jawahar lal Nehru, or mrs. Indra Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi.

This may happen again. None of the present personalities aspiring to become the prime minister seems to be strong enough to sway the public mood in their favor. No party seems to be going to contest the elections on its own without making poll adjustments with other parties.

Whenever a party, particularly the Congress made poll adjustments with regional parties, its political base narrowed down and image got tarnished. Had they gone to contest elections on their own, they may not have won majority in that particular election, but in the following elections they certainly would have done better. In my opinion this is true for all the times.
